I imagine something is screwed up with the compile/link options (or
installed libraries). Could you get one compilation line plus the link
line after doing:
./configure --enable-echo
?
They _do_ have solaris x86 machines at SLAC for the memory machine tests,
they are labeled as "i86pc":
memfs01 0 0 sunx86_510 5.10 2 - 17.0G 15.9G i86pc
with some opterons are also used as:
memfs52 0 0 i386_linux24 3 2 1791 34.2G 15.6G AMD-Opter

I can't seem to log on to either of these to try, though.
