ATLAS SCCS Planning 11Jul2007
-----------------------------
9am, SCCS Conf Rm A, to call in +1 510 665 5437, press 1, 3935#
Present: Richard, Booker, JohnB, Randy, Charlie, Stephen, Wei
Agenda:
1. DQ2 Status/Web Proxy
Was the 0.3 upgrade for DQ2. The central server had a problem so it
is down till tomorrow. There has constantly been problems since the
upgrade. Have not been getting many production jobs due to that,
yesterday changed the batch system fairshare configuration so that
the whole ATLAS priority can be shared between users and
production.
This was a big bang upgrade, not very well planned. Hopefully next
time will do better.
2. Tier-2 Hardware
Current purchase is all running.
Need to start looking at next round. Assuming we get more
money... as they do want more hardware online by the end of the
year. It will be in the next fiscal year but it needs to be at the
start of it to be able to get the hardware here and online by end
of calender year.
There will be infrastructure issues. There are many ways to
approach these needs. Will be taking delivery of a Sun Black Box on
Saturday. In a month or so it will be powered up. Only half of it
will be used by BaBar needs. Could discontinue use of nomas and
toris and put the power in that other half of the Black Box, could
then put in water cooled racks for ATLAS purchase. However, in the
past have taxed BaBar to provide general computing to the lab,
perhaps it is time to pay that back by using other users' money to
fill it. Either looks okay for ATLAS as the whole general queue
will go up. Would need to wait for Black Box number 2 to provide
full ATLAS capacity in next round to avoid piece meal installation
around building 50. Would mean working as a target date for end of
the year rather than a guaranteed availability date. For the next
round the CPU purchase should be half and storage doubled, so
might not occupy the same space. Density will be higher, which will
impose some limitations on where it can be installed.
The quotes for CPUs will be a competitive one so it will probably take
around four months to do the acquisition. Would be good to get a
volunteer to benchmark new machines.
3 AOB
- BNL Storage
Moving away from storing data on nodes towards Thumpers as the
storage element.
- Tier-2 Meeting
Asked if we should invert the Disk:CPU ratio in purchase again,
reaction was no, we should buy 2:1 Storage:CPU next time.
Easier to reallocate CPUs to other users when it isn't in use. Is
possible for storage but much harder.
- SLAC Tier-2 Meeting
Looks like last week of November. Using conference Room C&D. We
should invite Tier-3 people as Tiers 1&2 will not provide
enough. Will email Jim & Michael to see which days in particular
and how many. Will be after Thanksgiving. Probably won't use
InfoMedia as it is a small enough meeting. Will discuss budget
with Teri.
