ATLAS SCCS Planning 25Jul2007
-----------------------------
9am, SCCS Conf Rm A, to call in +1 510 665 5437, press 1, 3935#
Present: Len, Stephen, Charlie, Wei, JohnB, Randy, Tofigh, Booker
Agenda:
1. DQ2 Status/Web Proxy
Been a quite week, some jobs but not too many. Not enough jobs to
run yet to go to full capacity.
Have a special version of SRM from Berkeley to turn SRM into
gsiftp. Has to be SRMv2. The FTS version in use doesn't understand
the difference between SRMv1 and SRMv2. Might only need to
configure FTS correct to talk to SRMv2.
2. Tier-2 Hardware
Discussion to purchase Dell machines with eight cores. Doing a test
just now by BaBar. They think it is important for ATLAS to do tests
too. BaBar code looks to scale with clock rate. It is 2GHz and
doesn't perform quite as good as the 2GHz Opterons. The memory
bandwidth and latencies are worse on the Intel (it has a north
bridge to memory, AMD has a memory controller on all chips). They
have taken two dual-core chips and put them in one socket. The
machine is open currently. Machine has 16GB, and is eval01. This is
a Dell 1950. This may be the same machine used in the ATLAS HLT
farm. Believe CERN asked vendors to run SpecINT2k on their machines
(one instance per core and with gcc and certain switches), then
purchases based on SpecINT2k/$$.
AMD also have four core chips on the way but having yield problems,
but those may be better if available. Intel also developing a
better memory interface, but that is probably a year away.
Will be attempting to retire Pentium III and Pentium 4 systems this
"fall". Expect to replace this with Intel Quad core systems,
probably the Dell boxes. At the end of the year will need a new Sun
Black Box that could be filled with a Sun product but also
certainly quad core.
Would be interested to hear from Gordon about what changes they
made to the kernel for their 8-core machines.
Might need to put limits on jobs to avoid rogue jobs killing
others. Not sure how you can limit local disk space used. Or
network bandwidth.
