Dear Colleagues,
Last week the House Committee on Appropriations
voted on an emergency supplemental funding bill to
fund the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. None of the
proposed amendments to the President's request
included additional funds for science.

The Senate Appropriations Committee added a $1.2 Billion
Science Initiative, ( compared to $168.9 Billion for
Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom ):
"To help promote long-term economic development, the Committee
is recommending a total of $1.2 billion for programs under the
jurisdiction of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration,
the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health
and Department of Energy."

The full House and Senate still need to vote on the measures.
In related news, the administration has released a statement of
policy which states:
"... if this bill were presented to the President in its current
form, he would veto it."
