For discussion this week we have the article "The Telescope That Ate Astronomy",
Nature 467, 1028 (2010). This article discusses the history of the James Webb
Space Telescope mission and its pros and cons, especially regarding its cost
(and cost overruns) and their impact on other proposed missions. It also
discusses some of the technical risks involved in putting the telescope in a
no-repair-possible orbit at a million miles beyond the earth's orbit while
pushing the envelope with new technologies.
