Details:
We've seen a number of cases were busy machines (i.e. saturated gigabit
interface) would delay other (management/monitoring) traffic.
Would you consider marking all the actual xroot data traffic as lower
priority (in which case e.g. on Linux the default "qdisc_fast" packet
scheduling would do the right thing)? Effect on performance should be minimal
(unless xroot would be "competing" with similar other traffic from the same
box).
Should be something like
setsockopt(IPPROTO_IP, IP_TOS, IPTOS_THROUGHPUT)
(this is technically superceded by the IP "DSCP" field but I can't wrap my
head around the rfc2474 "differentiated services" acronyms, and anyway they
are supposed to be be backward-compatible).
