Follow-up Comment #3, bug #87960 (project xrootd):
More information to help...
Dual nic still and issue.
On the dual niced machine (atlas8 and atlas21). I have
[root@atlas8 ~]# cat /proc/sys/kernel/hostname
atlas8.hep.anl.gov
[root@atlas8 ~]# hostname
atlas8.hep.anl.gov
[root@atlas8 ~]# uname -a
Linux atlas8.hep.anl.gov 2.6.18-238.19.1.el5 #1 SMP Fri Jul 15 00:48:58 EDT
2011 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
Using the xrd command - queryspace /atlas I get -
[root@ascint3 ~]# xrd atlas21.hep.anl.gov queryspace /atlas
sec_Client: protocol request for host atlas21.hep.anl.gov
token='&P=sss,0.216000:/var/spool/xrootd/.xrd/sss.keytab.grp'

Here is what xrootdfs reports when mounted:
[root@ascint3 ~]# mount -t fuse -a
sec_Client: protocol request for host atlas21.hep.anl.gov
token='&P=sss,0.216000:/var/spool/xrootd/.xrd/sss.keytab.grp'

[root@ascint3 ~]# df -h /atlas21/atlas
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
xrootdfs 566G 29G 537G 6% /atlas21/atlas
Now if I set the host name of the stand alone data server to
atlas21 and restart xrootd on the machine.
[root@atlas8 ~]# cat /proc/sys/kernel/hostname
atlas21.hep.anl.gov
[root@atlas8 ~]# hostname
atlas21.hep.anl.gov
[root@atlas8 ~]# uname -n
atlas21.hep.anl.gov
(Note that my prompt still shows I am on the same machine)
[root@ascint3 ~]# xrd atlas21.hep.anl.gov queryspace /atlas
sec_Client: protocol request for host atlas21.hep.anl.gov
token='&P=sss,0.216000:/var/spool/xrootd/.xrd/sss.keytab.grp'

Here is what xrootdfs reports:
[root@ascint3 ~]# df -h /atlas21/atlas
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
xrootdfs 19T 163G 19T 1% /atlas21/atlas
So I would conclude the following
1) xrootdfs is not the source of the problem. I can use the xrd queryspace
command to see the same problem.
2) the problem is repeatable
3) I am not sure where xrootd is getting the weird values to present.
4) This is fairly serious
