Hello everyone,
we have had some unnecessary tensions during this release, namely:
some only care about having the current bugs fixed and keep the
systems running stable, others want new features, that are, as it
turned out, not really debugged well. Clearly, me trying to decide
arbitrarily on what goes to the release and what doesn't only heats
things up, so, in order to make things clear and transparent, I
propose to do the following:
1) We have a release from the master branch (all the current
developments) four times a year, ie:
3.2.0-rc1 on 26.03.2012
3.3.0-rc1 on 25.06.2012
3.4.0-rc1 on 24.09.2012
3.5.0-rc1 on 02.12.2012
This should be often enough to keep all the people wanting new
features happy and don't stall the developments. On these dates we
branch and fix bugs, what doesn't hit the window doesn't hit the
window. Period. This way we will avoid the "release paralysis" that we
have experienced already.
2) Additionally to the master releases there will be patch releases
that fix current bugs. These will only include things that:
a) have a bug number (either savannah, or red hat bugzilla) or are
small enough so that it doesn't make sense to file a bug report but
are still obviously bug fixes (a.k.a one-liners)
b) won't interfere in with normal system operation
These will normally happen at the end of each month starting end of
April or when a critical bug is discovered and needs to be fixed
urgently. The bug-fix releases shouldn't normally need much testing,
so probably no release candidate will be necessary. This will also
spare me the effort of back-porting half of the commits from the
master branch to the stable one, which does not make any sense at all.
If you have any comments or better ideas please don't hesitate to
let me know. If there is no comments, I will engrave this in stone
(publish on the web site), and we will proceed this way.
Cheers,
Lukasz
