I agree that this would make life easier for certain kinds of file systems.
Note that is a major change to the interface. I don't mind so much for the
ofs layer because it only impacts Andreas :-) But seriously, hes the only one
that interfaces at that level. Everyone else (and there are a lot of people)
plug into the oss layer. Disruptive changes there would not be very good. We
may be able to, as Andreas suggests, come up with a new ossv plugin that is
specific to passing through readv requests, otherwise they are handled in the
ofs layer.
This also gives us the opportunity to undo a bad decision of some time ago
where we exported the oss fd for sendfile purposes. That made it impossible
to do some neat real-time relocation techniques in the ofs layer. So, if we
are going to make a big change here, I would also change the interface so
that sendfile is handled via a callback instead of a direct object export.
