Hello All,
Currently Java 6 (a.k.a 1.6.0) and Java 7 (a.k.a 1.7.0) are installed
centrally in /afs/slac.stanford.edu/package/java and linked from
/usr/local/bin. The installed versions are:
Java 1.6.0 -> 1.6.0_39
Java 1.7.0 -> 1.7.0_13
Currently when invoking Java via
/usr/local/bin/java
it defaults to using Java 6, although this can be controlled by setting
setenv JAVAVER 1.7
However, we've received notice that after February 2013, Oracle will no
longer release security patches or post updates of Java SE 6 to its public
download sites. The public notice is posted at url:
http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/eol-135779.html
As a result we will change the default version of Java from Java 6 to Java
7 at 10am on Monday February 25th. We strongly suggest that you test any
applications using the centrally installed version of Java with the new
version prior to the change of the default version.
As always documentation on the full list of Java versions available at
SLAC and instructions on how to select the version you wish can be
accessed at:
http://www.slac.stanford.edu/comp/java/
regards, Chee
