Dear Colleagues,

Last week, I sent you an email about the Snowmass Theory meeting that we are organizing at the KITP, U C Santa Barbara, for May 29-31. I have two requests for you relevant to this meeting.

First, I apologize for a misunderstanding about the role of this meeting. The meeting is aimed at theorists. Theorists have two special roles in the Snowmass process. The first is that specialized theoretical work is needed to understand many questions that are raised in the working groups. The working groups are generating projects, and someone needs to do these projects. The second is that theorists are more capable of taking a high-level view of the models that we will want to test in the future and to compare the opportunities given by different approaches. Of course, these two roles are intertwined.

When we approached Lar Bildsten about holding a meeting at the KITP, he insisted that our meeting be framed as broadly as possible and, in particular, should include all three frontiers. This made it natural to concentrate the meeting on the second role above, looking horizontally at models of new physics across the capabilities of the three frontiers. The organizing committee for this meeting (Michael Peskin, Jonathan Feng, JoAnne Hewett, Liantao Wang, Yuval Grossman, and Tim Tait) have been making an effort to invite younger theorists who are not yet enlisted in the Snowmass process. The meeting will then concentrate on high-level discussion and, hopefully, recruitment to do work toward the goals of Snowmass. But, the work you need to have done will not necessarily be addressed at this meeting. I apologize to those among you who expected otherwise.

Nevertheless,

1. Chip and I would appreciate it if at least one theorist from each working would attend this meeting.

and

2. It would be very useful for each group to make a list of theoretical projects that you need done for your Snowmass report. We will publicize these in the preparatory materials for the KITP workshop, and the workshop organizers will help you find people to get the work done. Part of the plan for the workshop is to schedule as many short contributed talks as possible. We would be happy to give people working on your projects a chance to talk about them at the KITP.

If you would get back to us with a first list by Friday, Feb. 15, that would be ideal.

Thank you very much!

Michael
