Message through Americas LC mailing list directed to US colleagues:
Dear US ILC colleagues,
Last Thursday you received a request (or multiple requests!) to indicate your personal support of the P5 recommendations to HEPAP. This is a second attempt through the Americas list to urge you to do so. Many of you have signed and thank you if you have. But so far there are only 852 “signatures” nation-wide. We’ve sent identical requests through distribution lists for ATLAS and CMS and other large experiments, all users groups, a couple of theory lists, DOE and NSF PIs, the DPF general list, and various Snowmass lists. Given the many names on these mailing lists we can expect many more that 1000 signatories, perhaps 2000.
Here’s why: US particle physics suffers from a perception that we never agree and that unlike nuclear physics, we cannot back a strategic plan without destructive divisiveness. One could argue with that perception but it is nonetheless our reputation. This campaign is specifically designed to counter that impression with a couple of thousand “signatures” of endorsement.
It is critical that everyone take the 2 minutes required to add your name. If you’re a PI or a senior physicist, please inquire of your other colleagues that they do so. If you’re a junior physicist? …do the same!
A few questions have come up:
1) Can postdocs and graduate students sign? YES This is very important.
2) Can you use your email at a national lab ? YES This is not lobbying. The DOE and NSF through HEPAP commissioned the P5 report.
3) Remember, you have to respond to a confirming email that comes after you sign to actually appear on the list. Some people have not received that confirming email. There might be two reasons for that:
a) Please check your spam/junk folder. When I hear of this, we check the logs (we’re administering the effort at MSU) and in the vast majority of cases, the message was sent but swallowed by an email client.
b) Also, the sending is a two-step process. You indicate with a SUBMIT button on the main page. That takes you to a second page where you confirm your information with a second YES click to save…then the mail is sent. Don’t leave off that second request.
4) Can people from non-US institutions sign the letter? NO
5) My US institution is not on the list, what do I do? Send email to [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]> requesting that it be added to the pull-down menu. We’ve fixed a number of omissions. We started from the ILC TDR database from DESY and initially neglected to add institutions that weren’t part of the TDR, but that’s mostly fixed now.
Thanks for your effort here. It’s simple. It’s important.
Best regards,
Jim
