If it's of any help, I use fabric (http://www.fabfile.org/) to
manage my test cluster. It does not require any server-side setup. Doing
simple things is as simple as:
def restart():
run('service xrootd restart')
run('service cmsd restart')
]==> fab -f xrootd.py restart
And, since it's python, you can do more complex stuff pretty easily too:
