I think the scintillators are only a bit narrower than the crystals are long, but I
don’t remember the numbers. You can get an idea from the photo on page 2:

Our initial setup did have two thinner (in z) scintillators, but we were not convinced
either of their PMTs were functioning correctly. It may be possible in December to
revisit that, or maybe you know where to get a free working counter:)
Your option #2 would be possible, although it’s not obvious to me how much we
gain from that, since I think our biggest problem is low rates.
