Here are some impressions from the meeting. There were about 30 people
in attendance; 25 at any given time. Our talks went fine. Only we and
the folks running farms had used any of our tools (JAS mostly). Everyone
else presented stuff based on tools from their experiment or, in one
case, the ECFA LC study's SIMDET.
There was some disappointment in the $200k that has become available for
R&D. It will not cover very many postdocs! So, it remains a slow start.
There was no stated enthusiasm for PAW. We'll see how that goes when
the crunches come before Ann(e) Arbor and Sitges.
It was agreed that we would not be required to make any more mods to
either the fastMC or Gismo code prior to Sitges. People were asked to
try the code and report back. No one has yet tried the Root fastMC. I
asked Rick van Kooten, David Wagner and Homer Neal to do so. They agreed
to. I hope this will jumpstart use of the fastMC. Perhaps they could be
poked in the next week to remind them.
This leaves us time to make improvements at a reasonable pace. The ones
I see as needed (from the meeting) are:
> error matrix for parametrized tracks. I suggest we add two arrays to
the Tracks class in prep: helixParams[5] and helixErrorMatrix[15]. This
will need to be done in conjunction with Bruce Schumm.
> a box of material around the VXD in Gismo to represent the cryogenics.
Also to better parametrize the masks - get reasonable shapes to describe
the likely options.
> scheme to overlay machine backgrounds on simulated events
> as always, C++ versions of thrust and jet finders
> install and get running scripts from Don Benton to push output files
via ftp to Penn. We need to organize the directory structure of the
repository there.
There was a lot of pressure to bring up the full simulation code on
FNAL's Linux farm. We will have to do the install (perhaps Dave Gerdes
will assist). Also, some pushing for getting Vanderbilt going. The need
is for (lots of) 2-photon backgrounds. The required generators and batch
scripts will need to be installed at FNAL too, of course.
Don Benton will arrange to JAS- & Root-ize the Gismo ascii files. We
need to get him the revised Event and asc2root stuff pronto.
Of course, work on the parameters facility needs to proceed.
So, lots to do as always. Hopefully a little more relaxed. We have to
keep the faith that the LCD effort will catch and start to pick up.
See you in March,
Richard
