Dear Colleagues,

This is for the 2nd iteration on planning of subdetector w.g. talks
for the LC meeting at Obernai, with a list of contributions based on
feedback from our first mail.

    The relevant detector sessions are:

Sunday 14.00-16.00 Machine-Detector Interface
Sunday 16.30-18.00 Plenary of Detector Concept
Sunday 18.00-19.00 Detector Working Groups.
Monday 16.00-19.00 Detector Working Groups.
Tuesday Update on Detector Concept (20')

We are trying to avoid going parallel for subdetector w.g. talks,
so the Sunday plenary session should be limited to a short overview on
the detector CONCEPT UP TO NOW which also serves as input to the physics
discussions. The plenary on detector concept will thus be kept to 90'
so that the detector w.g.'s can start.

Here is the list of talks for the detector w.g. sessions
up to now (persons and titles only approximate):

   Ties Behnke..............Mask Instrumentation
Marcello Piccolo.........Work by U.Colo. (Uriel Nauenberg et al)
on forward Cerenkov for reducing gamma-gamma
                            background to Susy
Richard Hawkings.........b/c-tagging as fcn of beampipe radius
   Marc Winter..............CMOS progress for Vdet
   Marco Battaglia..........APS mechanical design
Massimo Caccia...........Meas. on sensor structure with interleaved pixels

Ron Settles..............Some TPC info from the Star TPC and Aleph shorts
Madhu Dixit..............Gem TPC R&D at Carleton
Marcos Dracos............Positive ions in TPC drift volume
Grahame Blair............Pattern recognition with backgrounds in the TPC
   Christain Hader..........Pattern recognition/track-linking

   Jean-Claude Brient.......SiW calo. performance
   Henri Videau.............SiW calo. design
Martino Margoni..........Caleido prototype for shashlik calo.

Marko Spegel.............RPC with 50ps resol./layer and 99% eff. for mips

For info, a preliminary list of people talking in the PLENARY part on
detector CONCEPT is Damerell, Moenig, Settles, Behnke, Colas,
Bertolucci, Piccolo, Sinram/Kuehlmann, so if you don't see them above,
that's why.

So, for the detector w.g. sessions there are a total of 15 talks
in 4 hours which would correspond to 16' per talk which is unrealisitic
unless we go parallel a bit. You will certainly let us know if there are
mistakes above (which surely exist), and we are looking forward to your feedback.
After that we'll send around another update next week before the Obernai
meeting. Attached below is a list of detector-related contact people.
Last minute adjustment of the schedule will be made during the workshop,
as usual.

Please send your convener, Rolf ([log in to unmask]) and
me ([log in to unmask]) a mail if you would like to present something.

For info, Rolf's summary of the July detector meeting in CERN is
also repeated below.

                     Best regards,
                                  Rolf and Ron

SUMMARY OF THE JULY'99 MEETING AT CERN

As discussed in Oxford, one of our goals at the Obernai workshop will
be to (hopefully) finalise the detector CONCEPT for the TDR.
To prepare for the decision a detector meeting was held at CERN
at the beginning of July the minutes of which you can find on the
 ECFA/DESY web pages.

The present thinking within the detector group can be summarised
 as follows:

-- We aim at a magnetic field of at least 3T with a coil design
which should allow to reach a maximum of 4T.
-- The coil thickness will be between 1.5 and 1.73 lambda
-- The inner radius of the coil will be kept at the CDR value of
    some 3m.
-- Electromagnetic and hadronic calorimeter will be inside the coil
    (total of about 4.5-5 lambda).
-- The TPC outer radius will be left at its CDR value.
-- The TPC inner radius might be moved inwards by 5-7 cm.
-- A detector yielding a precise space point will be placed between
TPC and Ecal in the endcap region.
-- There will be at least one detector layer between TPC and Vertex
detector for track linking and momentum resolution,
an ITC as described in the CDR will most probably not be needed.
-- Four to five disks will be placed in the forward region (theta > 80mrad)
to achieve best possible angle and momentum resolution.
-- The vertex detector itself does not need additional forward
discs beyond those mentioned in the previous point, unless a physics
    argument can demonstrate their usefulness.
An increased vertex detector acceptance in theta seems possible
by increasing the length of the first vertex layer from +-2.5 cm
to +-5 cm without running into background problems.
-- Instrumentation of the mask region looks feasible down to 20 mrad,
i.e. hermeticity down to 20 mrad.

 Main open questions:

-Which is the desired magnetic field strength (3...4T)?
 -Length of the coil?
-What granularity (transverse and longitudinal) do we need in the
calorimeter?=====Your input is needed here most importantly=====
-Which cos(theta) acceptance is needed for b/c tagging?
-Do we need a bunch tagging device? If yes, stand-alone subdetector
  or part of Ecal/Hcal/Muon?
-Particle (i.e. hadron) identification was not discussed in depth up to now.
==Whoever feels that we need a special particle id detector in addition to
the dE/dx measurement in the TPC, should make the case NOW.==
-inner radius of the beampipe: 1.1cm vs 1.5cm
