              Secretary Abraham Establishes 
     Task Force on the Future of Science Programs at 
                           DOE 

              MIT President Charles M. Vest 
                  to Serve as Chairman 

 WASHINGTON, DC -- Secretary of Energy Spencer Abraham 
 today named Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) 
 President Charles M. Vest to head a high-level Task 
 Force on the Future of Science Programs at the 
 Department of Energy. The task force will examine 
 science and technology programs across the department 
 and consider future priorities for scientific research. 

 "I am grateful that Chuck Vest has agreed to chair this 
 important task force." Secretary Abraham said. "I want 
 to ensure that the Department of Energy remains on the 
 frontier of research as we address our evolving 
 missions in the future." 

 The Task Force on the Future of Science Programs at the 
 Energy Department will operate as a subcommittee of the 
 Secretary of Energy Advisory Board (SEAB), the highest 
 external advisory board in the Department of Energy 
 (DOE). The task force will present its final report to 
 SEAB next summer. The Secretary of Energy Advisory 
 Board was chartered in 1990, to provide the Secretary 
 with timely, balanced, independent advice on the 
 department's laboratory operations, science, energy and 
 national security policy issues, and other topics as 
 directed by the Secretary. 

 Dr. Vest is President of MIT and a member of the 
 university's Mechanical Engineering faculty. He serves 
 on the President's Committee of Advisors on Science and 
 Technology (PCAST) and is vice chair of the Council on 
 Competitiveness. He is the former chairman of the 
 National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) 
 Advisory Committee on the Redesign of the Space Station 
 and the Association of American Universities.
