  This is well documented in the xrootd protocol document, available from 
the xrootd web page:

It looks like things are sent in network byte order, see section 2 of the
protocol document, for example.

  No, we definitely used mix the endian types, typically x86/linux clients with
sparc/solaris servers at SLAC. That would be somewhat awkward assumption to
make in any case...
