  Yes, Fabrizio and I have already designed how to make the correct 
  checks and definitions in configure ... but unfortunately we did not
  find the time to implement it ... it will be solved soon.

  For the time being:

    1) if you do not need the perl features, just change 'perl5.8' in 'perl'
       in src/XrdClient/GNUmakefile

    2) if you need the perl module, your perl is v5.8 or higher, then 
       define a link named perl5.8 to your perl executable in a location
       searched by your PATH.
