Enrica specified the OS version below (Scientific Linux CERN Release 3.0.4).
Ignore the "CERN" (and send them nasty messages about it as they are just
ridiculous), but once I unzipped the core file and using the xrootd binary
from the tarball:
$BFROOT/www/Computing/Distributed/xrootd/download/20050328-0656/xrootd-20050328-0656.i386_rhel30.tgz
I was able to do the following on noric01 (a RHEL3 Update 4 machine at SLAC):

I think this is just the same crash reported some time ago by Dan Bradley
and fixed in subsequent versions. (So if we fix the last problems in
the current pre-production release so that it becomes "production", they
should move ahead to the new version.)
