Andy, thank you for the response.  I added the AuthDB file to the web page, but here is the content:

u starlib /home a /data a
u starreco /home a /data a
u * /home lr /data lr

The user trying to write is starlib.  The target file in one of the examples I sent was:  /home/starlib/home/starreco/reco/EmcCheck/ReversedFullField/P08ie/2008/048/9048041/test3.root

I went back and tried progressively simpler versions of the AuthDB file, but still failed to write.

The most likely problem here is an incorrectly specified auth file. It's quite easy to create a set of authorization that allow over-writing a file but not creating a new one. Could you show us the auth file you are using and provide the name of the user trying to create as well as the pathname.
