Details:

Hello,

Here is my initial comparison of CERN XRootd installtion from CERN yum
repository to OSG yum repository.

CERN:
Initial installation based local (Duke Univ.) yum repository based on the rpm
found here:
http://xrootd.cern.ch/sw/releases/3.0.3/rpms/user_xrootd/

User xrootd:xrootd created automatically

Subsequent installation based on CERN provided xrootd repository

http://xrootd.cern.ch/sw/repos/slc4/x86_64/
http://xrootd.cern.ch/sw/repos/slc5/x86_64/
http://xrootd.cern.ch/sw/repos/slc6/x86_64/

xrootd:xrootd user not created automatically. directory /var/spool/xrootd
owned by user daemon:daemon , /var/log/xrootd owned by xrootd:xrootd.

situation would have been corrected if ran the command
/sbin/service xrootd setup (or /etc/init.d/xrootd setup) after yum
installation.

OSG/VDT yum installation:

automatically creates xrootd:xrootd user and has ownership of all appropriate
files. This installation contains the same setup command as CERN installation
so perhaps installing the xrootd user from the rpm is superfluous given the
command already in /etc/init.d/xrootd

Comments applicable to both installations:

file /etc/sysconfig/xrootd does not contain the two lines needed
for a seconded name xrootd server on the redirector needed for the simple
server inventory. The lines are:

XROOTD_CNS_OPTIONS="-k 7 -l /var/log/xrootd/xrootd.log -c
/etc/xrootd/xrootd-clustered.cfg"

and

XROOTD_INSTANCES="default cns"

The *_OPTIONS lines within /etc/sysconfig/xrootd file are missing the flag to
restrict the number of log files. 7 days of log files should be sufficient so
"-k 7" flag should be added.

------

Conclusions small differences between CERN provided and OSG provided yum
repository.

------
Still to test xrootdfs include (sss security setting)

and frm

Regards,

Doug Benjamin
