Ah, sorry for the confusion.  That was a cut and paste error.  I did install the x86_64 version:

[root@fermicloud040 ~]# rpm -qa | grep xrootd

gratia-probe-xrootd-storage-1.09-0.4.1.pre.noarch

   it looks like you're installing 32 bit XRootD and try to use it in 64bit
context...
