Hi Martin,
the upcoming XRootD release (3.1.0) drops the classical build system in
favor of CMake. The release should come out soon, depending on how fast we
manage to sort out some final Solaris issues. You may try out a release
candidate if you wish:
http://xrootd.cern.ch/cgi-bin/cgit.cgi/xrootd/snapshot/xrootd-3.1.0-rc3.tar.bz2
It should be fully functional on Linux.
