Dear Colleagues, The Director of the DOE Office of Science, Bill Brinkman, recently presented the President's FY2013 Budget request to the House Subcommittee on Energy & Water Appropriations. His formal statement can be found at: http://appropriations.house.gov/UploadedFiles/HHRG-112-AP10-WState-WBrinkman-20120320.pdf The following AIP FYI Bulletin provides a summary of the meeting itself including some of the Director's answers to questions: http://www.aip.org/fyi/2012/043.html Of particular note is the following: " [Ranking Minority Member Peter] Visclosky asked about the status of the Long Baseline Neutrino Experiment following the decision that the National Science Foundation will not participate in the program. Brinkman praised a report that the high energy physics community had developed, but said it had "a very high price." "I don't see us as being able to do that specific experiment" he testified, saying that the FY 2013 request would enable DOE to continue pumping water from the Homestake Gold Mine and to conduct two smaller experiments.
