I understand that the id command on lxplus gives you the same result? If so,
lxplus probably has some LDAP workarounds in place.
Try:
cat /etc/ldap.conf
Besides, it looks like you're trying an slc5 setup: i686-slc5-gcc43-opt is
this what you intend?
