I don't think the blocking solution is right. We have it right now in the old client and it appears to be much worse (see the first post). I suspect that the syscalls are at fault only indirectly here: ie. triggering a problem elsewhere, like lock contention or something of this sort. I will try to find a way to profile where the system time is being spent.
