For reference this was solved by actually going back to Java1.7. I had misunderstood the emails regarding the 1.6 vs 1.7 use of Java.

To clarify we should always use java 1.7 jdk since 1.6 has security vulnerabilities. However, when compiling with 1.7 it can be configured to create 1.6 compatible libraries which was the confusion.

I can also confirm that compiling with Netbeans works fine (there was a question whether it does the exact same compilation as from cmd line mvn command). Netbeans also (magically?) picks up my local maven installation correctly.

I'm not sure how it would know to download the correct versionand how it can work for others. I have cleaned my m2 directory and it's still there. Since I just switched back from 1.7 I guess I'm missing something but not sure what.
