FYI, I played with Zookeeper plus Kazoo, and I am able to insert new nodes at the speed of ~1250 per second. My Zookeeper configuration is the same as the one Douglas set up, and I run it on a similar class machine. I didn't bother with using the native zookeeper python client. I believe Douglas mentioned to me at the qserv meeting after the hackathon that he tried Kazoo and got the same (dismal) speed, so it is a bit puzzling, but after all, it is good that the speed is reasonable, as it should be.
