Indeed, it is reproducible on lxplus. However, he problem disappears when I use xrdcp from git head (of course I had to match the libraries as well via LD_PRELOAD). So, he problem appears to be with the way the xrootd client was installed on the lxplus machines. I suspect a library mismatch.
