I see that you feel strongly, so we can put most of util/common.h into util/stringTypes.h and just include it. Still, when only StringMap is needed, I'm not convinced it's problematic--the typedef seems preferable to using std::map<std::string,std::string>, and having an #include instead really only moves the visual clutter to another part of the file.
