Ahh ... I found it ....
in /etc/sysconfig/xrootd
set
XROOTD_USER=root
XROOTD_GROUP=root
and
add "-Rxrootd" to a line like this:
XROOTD_DEFAULT_OPTIONS="-l /var/log/xrootd/xrootd.log -c /etc/xrootd/xrootd-clustered.cfg -k fifo -Rxrootd"
That should do it!
