I was at the gym this morning and it hit me. Instead of having this patch b2ee725 (which actually is pretty neat) and another more complex one. Perhaps a better solution would be to have a loop in File's destructor that would send Close until it succeeded or returned an unrecoverable error. This would ideally indicate that there is no recovery going on and it's safe to delete the File.
