Back then sites and users were using half-tested non-release code en masse. It's true that it was much harder to distinguish, because we were using timestamps. I could sometimes get 50 or more emails a day, so even saying "sorry, not supported" took time and was a pain. Also, the stability of the global ecosystem as a whole was far worse.
