Unfortunately, I don't think there's any generic way to have rpm and git both be happy: you won't be able to create a linear sequence of numbers and handle arbitrary branches!

My goal here is to be able to always produce a pre-release RPM for testers from master and the latest stable series. I would also like that RPM to have meaning to upstream - i.e., it should be easily traceable back to a particular commit.

Is there a document describing the branching and tagging strategy for Xrootd? (Particularly, it seems quite strange to have the stable branches not merged back into master.) Given a document like that, I can probably come up with a script that meets my above requirements.
