I misunderstood your original post ;-)

So you are reading from a data server and a socket error kicks in, you disabled the read recovery and instead you are using your own logic in CMSSW, right?

Could you give me a log with what the client is actually doing in CMSSW in order to recover from the socket error? Could you check what is the URL you are using for recovery. Most likely you need to drop all opaque info from the URL.
