To use the "new" ECal detector description, we just need to include a compact detector element like this:

detector-model/src/test/resources/org/lcsim/geometry/subdetector/HPSEcal4Test.xml

Is this something we want to do for the v7-fieldmap detector?

No, we’re not using it, and I don’t know how to.  Relative crystal positions are still hardcoded.
