The problem is a bit moot by now though since I found that using the recursive option in xrdcp does the trick for me. But I agree with Thomas, having this kind of feature - stdin stream support - would be pretty useful. I have just been thinking, that something like tar -cJfv - dirwmanysmallfiles/ | xrdcp - root://foo.site:1094/path/arch.tar.xz could be useful?
