The only viable solution here is to field http requests on the xrootd port (this is allowed). The issue is that http bridges to the xrootd protocol and that protocol only understands xrootd ports. However, if http is listening on the xrootd port (which it can) then it all works out as the server sends the request to the right protocol. I will lok to see if we can make that the default should the http protocol plugin be loaded.
