Frankly, I think these hidden quirks of you asked for this but I couldn't do it so I'll just assume you didn't need it is the wrong way to go. If you asked for a checksum and we couldn't do a checksum that should be considered a hard failure. Otherwise, you'll assume everything went fine (messages can be missed especially when there is no person to see them). So, if you get a hard failure and don't mind copying the file without check summing then you really should ask for it that way.
