Indeed!
I think the cause is that gfal-ls uses readdir internally, which probably causes this difference in behaviour. This leads me to believe it is an xrootd bug (of course, modifying gfal2 would also workaround it).
I believe the observation by Petr concerning WebDAV in this situation (duplicate entries) may also be worth an issue report.
