Looking at the readdir manpage, it is sufficiently threadsafe for the glibc implementation (we can't share the same DIR* across multiple threads). I'll change it back to the standard one.

That said, before we start adding all of this, we should look at how to coordinate these specifications. As it stands we now have potentially 4 places

I'm a bit indifferent to the requested env var from @esindril; I can see where it's useful as a hidden feature to help test this but I'd be reluctant to document it outside Elvin's testing. I'll let you two figure out what you want.

However - beyond the env var, I didn't touch any of the configuration code. This is all done at the XrdHTTP layer and passed through to the extension handlers. The change here is simply making sure the certfile is passed through internally as well.
