@simonmichal So, the feature works as advertised :) thanks a lot! but i would have some small comments :)

  1. the actual variables that work are those that can be only found by grepping XrdClDefaultEnv.cc and XrdClConstants.hh
it would be useful to add to https://xrootd.slac.stanford.edu/doc/xrdcl-docs/www/xrdcldocs.html#x1-80004 and https://xrootd.slac.stanford.edu/doc/man/xrdcp.1.html#ENVIRONMENT (the latter should have/be a link to the former to have a single point of information on the subject) also the names to be used in conf file or in internal applications like python
  2. maybe a mapping or automatic translation can be added to make CPTimeout equivalent with CPTIMEOUT?
  3. the order of conf application: i noticed that the configuration is applied before my EnvPut (i check if the XRD_name exists in env and if not i set some default). at this moment i do not know how to check if the env was already setup (with the idea that i want to apply my defaults ONLY IF if was not already setup by other mechanism), but maybe the conf file can be applied at the end of all other settings?
    Thanks a lot!
