I don't know if this helps, but I've tried to reproduce the problem with xrdcp using the following:

xrdcp -DICPParallelChunks 1 -DICPChunkSize 4194304 root://ceph-gw8.gridpp.rl.ac.uk:1094/dteam:test1/domatest/jwalder/HTTP_1GB .

From #1491, I believe this should reproduce the behaviour of dCache's (current) embedded client, which makes 4 MiB read requests with a maximum of one in-flight request at any time.

However, I've been unable to reproduce the problem . The above command completes successfully for me.

Does the xrdcp command "stat" the file and use the expected length to avoid downloading too many bytes?

I think Andy suggested this possibility, but it would be good to know for sure.
