Michal, thank you for this information, it does clarify things.

We can similarly not write beyond EOF (we currently "trust" the file size as sent using oss.asize to the destination server, but we could also put a stat call in to the TPC client for extra security).

But it now seems I can no longer test this because the RAL team seems to have modified the behavior of their endpoint. Our old, unmodified code now works there.
