I have also found a similar issue using a distributed xrootd system. Using the ls command inside xrdfs lists the directory properly however using a command such as gfal-ls exhibits this same behavior where the xrootd system returns an error or returns 0 without listing anything for a directory but does list a specified file within the directory. I can attach logs if required.

This also might be a separate issue and I can open another one if this is the case.
