@vokac : could you replace `xrootd.async on` with `xrootd.async off`, now there are two reasons, first is that `xrootd.async on` is not a valid option https://xrootd.slac.stanford.edu/doc/dev55/xrd_config.htm#_async, the second is that we recommend enabling `xrootd.async` only for XCache. I think the `xrootd.async on` confuses the server and makes him send those very small (64KB) chunks. So please set it to `xrootd.async off`, give it a try and let us know how it goes! :-)

P. S.
Regarding the `5.4.2` vs `5.4.3`, the reason it works with `5.4.2` is that the client will disable `pgread` as there is a known bug in the server.
