Hi all,

I hope the lunchtime games are going well. I intend to start playing on Thursdays as soon as my schedule and my knee allow. I miss the SLAC group and pitch.

Please see the e-mail below from a Lockheed Martin employee who is looking to get his PhD at Stanford, and is interested in doing work in conjunction with SLAC. I would appreciate it if someone could help me introduce Jimmy to one of the SLAC scientists he mentions.

Also note, the initial e-mail is from our old soccer friend, Michael Wisser, who played at SLAC for a while. He is now in the Denver area, so we likely won’t see him for a while.

Thanks,

- Jeff

Hi Jeff,

Thank you for the response! Hope you’re having a nice time on vacation. Cool to hear about the telescope too; hope that turns out!

I have not been accepted yet; I plan on applying this fall to begin study in Fall 2023. In the meantime, I’m hoping to connect with some professors in the Physics and Applied Physics departments to understand their group’s research and see if they’re looking for new PhD students. Many professors in these departments are also connected with SLAC. Some folks I’ve come across that I’d be interested in working with are:

  * Prof. Mike Dunne (Photon Science). Director of Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) and associate lab director at SLAC. Works with fusion energy.
  * Prof. Chao-Lin Kuo (Particle Physics). Works with SLAC on experimental techniques of detecting the cosmic microwave background.
  * Prof. Tom Abel (Cosmology). Former (2018) Director of the Particle Astrophysics and Cosmology Division at SLAC. Works on first-principles modeling.

If you happen to know someone associated with these people or groups, I’d appreciate an introduction! The list is not exhaustive, so if you know some folks at SLAC who may be willing to chat about life at Stanford/SLAC in general, that would also be great.

Thank you again,
Jimmy

Thanks Michael, nice to hear from you again! I’ve been playing Tue/Fri evenings at Stanford but still haven’t been back to the SLAC lunchtime game, even though they started allowing non-SLAC folks about 6 months ago. I’ve been too busy with NGI to get out as much as I’d like. On the other hand, I am staying connected to SLAC by trying to bring them in on a proposed $1B NASA Probe Mission for an X-ray space telescope, so I have some new connections there in addition to the soccer folks.

Hi Jimmy. I am currently on vacation, until next Monday, but would be happy to see what I can learn about potential work in collaboration with SLAC and a Stanford PhD. What is the status of that? Have you been accepted? Is there a specific professor you are interested in working for? Does that professor already have connections at SLAC?

I’m a bit groggy from a long day. I hope to check e-mail again on Friday or Saturday.

Best wishes,

- Jeff

Hi Jeff,

Nice to meet you!

Thanks, Michael, for the introduction. I think your words pretty accurately capture things. To be more specific about the research side, I’m primarily interested in data science and machine learning as applied to physics-based problems, but I’m early enough in my career to be excited by many shiny objects in the world of computational and theoretical materials science, particle physics, and astrophysics. I’d appreciate being able to have a chat with someone involved in some subset of these areas at SLAC.

Thank you in advance, and looking forward to hearing back.

Best,
Jimmy

Hi, Jeff,

I hope you’ve been doing well since we last talked! I also hope you’ve been making lots of fruit leather and crushing it in the SLAC soccer game. I found a good pickup game out here (in fact, I’m pretty sure I saw our friend Ian Ferguson there, randomly), but I hurt my knee during my second time out and haven’t been back since 😭.

Anyway, in addition to small talk, I’m reaching out to introduce you to Jimmy Lynch and to make a request on his behalf. Jimmy is a research scientist in HyperAEMM at the ATC with a background in astrophysics. He is potentially interested in pursuing a PhD at Stanford, ideally in a group that does research at SLAC. He asked if I knew people at SLAC, and I told him that I know a guy who knows all the best soccer players at SLAC (that’s you).

So, would you be willing to make an intro for Jimmy to any of your SLAC friends involved in the research side of things? I’ll invite Jimmy to suggest whether or not he wants to chat with you directly beforehand or if he thinks my little email sufficiently captures things.

Thanks, and I hope everything is going awesomely for you!

Michael
