The problem appears to be related to the Ceph plugin with a parallel stream is used. This is being investigated by RAL. In the mean time they are using a custom source build that indicates that parallel streams are not supported which avoids the SEGV and provides some breathing room until the actual problem can be diagnosed. So, I am closing this and will reopen it should the problem wind up on the xrootd side after all.
