I gave this a go, but got stuck due to openssl not being available on the machine I have access to. However, do I get the impression correctly that you are using the option -Dbuiltin_xrootd=ON from ROOT? Homebrew already has a formula for XRootD, so you should really unbundle XRootD from ROOT and declare XRootD as a regular dependency in ROOT's formula.
